B. Eric Rhoads
Born 1954
Fort Wayne, Indiana

Hanging prominently in Eric Rhoads home is a floral painting he created at age twelve at his childhood home in Indiana. Also hanging in his home is a portrait of Rhoads at age twelve painted by his mother an amateur artist whose encouragement and guidance lead him to a lifelong passion for art.

Though Rhoads spent much of his life sketching places he visited his career path took him into another artistic direction… he became a radio air personality in several cities around the U.S. with his voice being heard by millions. Though radio was a wonderful creative outlet Rhoads also had a passion for photography which lead him to supplement his radio income with professional photographic portraiture. “This is where I learned about light and values, which were invaluable to my understanding of light and values in painting", said Rhoads. Though he continued to sketch and paint in his spare time his love of radio broadcasting lead him into radio station ownership.

Following the sale of his radio stations several years later Rhoads, the consummate entrepreneur continued to start businesses. In 1986 Rhoads entered the publishing business, which he operates today and has started several magazines and published several books, including one he authored. When his business stabilized Rhoads decided to pursue his passion of art and signed on with the Atelier of Jack Jackson who was a student of world renowned artists Frank Rielly and Ives Gammel. (Jackson, who had studied at the Rominelli Studios in Florence, became part of a 600 year lineage of some of the great Renaissance artists who craft was passed generation to generation.) Under Jackson Rhoads studied for 5 years in a traditional academic environment with a focus on learning portraiture by copying works by great Renaissance masters though the 18th century.

Upon learning that his wife Laurie was pregnant with Triplets (which were born in 2002) Rhoads abandoned his extensive portraiture work for plein air landscape painting which required less time commitment. “I had to learn how to paint all over again. Painting on location requires a completely different discipline than studio painting”, said Rhoads. As Rhoads became more involved in the plein air movement he decided to apply his publishing skills to the development of a new art magazine which he titled Plein Air Magazine. In 2006 Rhoads broadened the focus of the magazine which became Fine Art Connoisseur where he is owner as well as Editor-in-Chief. The magazine is distributed to art collectors, curators and historians worldwide.
